What Was Proposition 50

Proposition 50 was the Elections Integrity Reforms Act, a statewide measure that updated California’s redistricting schedule so that district maps aligned with the most recent population data.

Why was there a Special Election?

A Special Election was required because the timing of the redistricting update needed voter approval before the new district maps could take effect.

How were districts affected

District boundaries changed for many communities in Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. These changes are now in effect and shaped the ballots used during the 2025 Special Election.

How could residents check their district?

Residents were encouraged to use the Secretary of State’s district lookup tool or their county elections office to confirm their updated district. These tools remain available for continued use.

What did a YES vote mean?

A YES vote on this measure meant: The state would use new, legislatively drawn congressional district maps starting in 2026. California’s new maps would be used until the California Citizens Redistricting Commission draws new maps following the 2030 U.S. Census.

What did outreach teams focus on during the election?

Teams focused on helping residents understand Proposition 50, providing accurate district information, and sharing nonpartisan voting resources with communities across the region.

What did the campaign learn?

Partners learned that many residents were hearing about Proposition 50 for the first time at their door or on the phone, and that clear and timely information helped increase awareness during a rapid election timeline.

What did a NO vote mean?

A NO vote on this measure meant: Current congressional district maps drawn by the California Citizens Redistricting Commission (Commission) would continue to be used in California until the Commission draws new maps following the 2030 U.S. Census.
